Lent at Faith

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent – historically a time of fasting in preparation for the Easter Festival. Some Christians still choose to fast during this season although not all from food and drink: some choose to fast from things like social media or specific kinds of foods and drinks…like dessert and alcohol. However you choose to acknowledge the season, Lent is a devotional time in our tradition which is reflected in our worship and fellowship.

Ash Wednesday services will be held on Wednesday, March 1st at 12pm at Faith and at 7:30pm at Concordia Lutheran Church (40 Pitkin Street, Manchester) where we will worship with our faith partners from  Concordia, Emanuel Lutheran Church, and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. The 12pm service will be a service of the word and will not include Holy Communion. The 7:30pm service will be a full Eucharist.

During the season of Lent we will gather each Wednesday night for a simple soup supper at 6pm and a program of devotion and study at 7pm. All are welcome!

Those who wish to help prepare soup or a side dish for meals should contact our Fellowship Committee Chairperson, Pat Sack.

Holy Week and Easter

Holy Week is the week leading up to Easter – the day we celebrate the resurrection of Christ. We start with Palm Sunday on April 9th at 9:30am. Here at Faith, Palm Sunday is a day of processing with palms and shouts of “Hosanna” as we remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The Sunday morning service at Faith is a healing service – providing time for those of us who fasted in any way during Lent to come and mark the close of the season with anointing oil and prayers for wholeness. There is no Holy Communion on Palm Sunday.

Holy Week continues with the celebration of Maundy Thursday on Thursday, April 13th at 6:30pm. This is the night we remember Jesus’ last supper with his disciples – the night he washed his disciples’ feet and showed his followers what it meant to serve one another. This is also the night we remember Jesus instituting the Lord’s Supper – Holy Communion. At Faith, this service is held within the context of a meal. Join us for supper where we will wash each others’ feet and share in the breaking of bread!

Good Friday will be marked with two services on Friday, April 14th 12pm and 7:30pm. This is a Tenebrae service – a service where lights are slowly extinguished to recall how the brightest light, Jesus Christ, was killed on a cross. The service includes music, scripture, and poetry to take us through the story of Jesus’ Passion – his last days.

There is no Easter Vigil at Faith – however, many of the surrounding faith communities will be gathering in vigil on Saturday, April 15th.

Easter morning is celebrated at Faith on Sunday, April 16th with a potluck Easter breakfast at 8am, an Easter Egg Hunt for our Sunday School at 9am, and Holy Eucharist at 9:30am. Please join us for any and all of these faith-filled worship opportunities!
